Board games review: rules and strategy of Battle Masters

Battle-Masters is a fantasy board game produced by American games company Milton Bradley (a brand of Hasbro) and it is a game very similar to the most famous Hero Quest.

Battle masters consists of two fighting armies on a big game board: humans which represent the good, and the beasts (ogres, goblins) which are the forces of the evil.

the fighting miniatures re very nice collectable pieces made of small plastic parts and are grouped in about twenty "bands”. Playing the Battle Masters board game is really simple. The order of movement is determined randomly from a deck of cards. Each card represents a unit, that can move one space and then attack. To attack with a unit each team playing rolls, from 2 to 5 dice (it depends from the power of the unit) trying to get the skulls drawn on the sides of the dives. Unity in defense, rolls the dives trying to get shields and block the attack.

Each shield blocks a skull, if the shields are more or equal than the number of the skulls the attack is blocked, and nothing happens, on the contrary if the skulls are more than the shields, the difference between skulls and shields determine the damage that the unit in the defense suffers. Each unit has three life points then it is removed from the game. Both sides have a special unit, a secret weapon to defeat the opponents army. Humans have the cannon , the beasts have the Ogre champion. Those special units have different modalities of functioning and and if well used can solve the conflicts in few moves, but can be also completely useless. This is all you need to know to play Battle Masters board game which is not a great strategy game, mostly because it is based entirely on luck, both on the dice, both the order of movement, both on the randomness results of the special units. Therefore, the misfortune can undermine the failure even of the best strategy and vice-versa is possible to win playing randomly with the beginner's luck.Take a look at the Battle Masters board game trailer.

  1. I've been looking all over the internet for the alternate rules that a lot of people came up with for this game. Namely, the "points value system" that assigns a points value to the different units. This allows those with more than one set of the game to customize their armies. A long time ago it was easy to find, now I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone have a site or URL for these rules? Thanks.
